Unknown persons broke into the Campbellville Post Office some time between Friday night and early yesterday morning and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash after torching a safe.
Details of the incident are sketchy and officials of the post office declined to comment when Stabroek News visited around 10 am. The post office has been closed until further notice.
The security guard who was supposedly on duty is being questioned by the police.
Reports reaching this newspaper are that the perpetrators entered through a side door. This post office has suffered several break-ins over the years and the side door seems to be the favourite entry point for the thieves.
This newspaper was told that “not much money” was taken. The break in was discovered when employees reported for work some time before 7 am.
When contacted Chairman of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) Bishop Juan Edghill said he was awaiting a report on the incident. He said that a guard is attached to the post office and that person was with the police.
He said he suspected things were stolen but did not elaborate further on this. Bishop Edghill told Stabroek News that the perpetrators went through a lot of trouble to torch a safe.
Police are continuing investigations.
