The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is launching a new publication this month as part of a series of activities to commemorate Intenation-al Year for People of African Descent.
Minister Dr Frank Anthony made this annou-ncement at a recent press briefing at the ministry’s Main Street office, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.
The publication will be the first of its kind and features the testimonies of slaves from Berbice, from 1820 to 1823, garnered by a local historian. Dr Anthony is also encouraging members of the various African groups/ organisations to participate in the float parade on Mashramani day to showcase African culture and practices.
GINA said the UN declaration of 2011 as the “International Year for People of African Descent” seeks to strengthen national actions and regional and international cooperation for the benefit of people of African descent, to enable their full enjoyment, participation and integration into the economic, cultural, social, civil and political aspects of society.
