Ageday triumphs in 100m, 200m races

Discipline proved to be a crucial factor for Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year, Chavez Ageday when he won the 100 metres boys under-20 race which had five false starts at the Eve Leary ground yesterday.

Ageday, competing in the under-20 category, remained composed and turned in an impressive hand time of 10.10 seconds in his first race of the season. Winston Caesar and Stephan James were second and third respectively with times of 10.45 seconds and 10.75 seconds respectively.

Ageday later returned in the Open category to win the 200 metres.
On the distaff side, Ashley Tasher continued from last year to cop the sprint double in the 100 metres and 200 metres races in the under 18 category. She clocked 12.67 seconds in the 100 metres despite a bad start.
However, she took control of the race at the 50 metres point to overtake Shaquan Daniels and Letisha David, who placed second and third.
In the 200 metres, Tasher registered 25.90 seconds ahead of Daniels and Ronetta Evelyn.

Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) sprint aces, Quincy Clarke and Rupert Perry started their season with the 400 metres race and settled for second and third respectively.  Ayeni Craig of New Amsterdam Track Club romped to victory.

Police Youth Club’s (PYC) Winston George started the year with a win over rivals, Clarke and Perry with a time of 10.29 seconds. George’s club mate Keith Roberts (10.34 seconds) was second while Alton Seaforth (10.54 seconds) crossed the line in third place.

Middle distance runner Cleveland Thomas also had a good day with wins in the 800 metres and 1500 metres men’s races with times of 2:01.29 and 4:21.91 respectively.

Alisha Fortune was granted a reprieve after a false start, which is a contravention of IAAF rules regarding the false start. She eventually won the race in 24.48 seconds ahead of Akeela Alves (26.62 seconds) and Nadine Rodriques (26.88 seconds).

The next meet on the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) roster is the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) trials on March 5 while the National Youth and Junior trials will be on March 12 and 13.
