A 58-year-old pedal cyclist lost his life after he was struck down by a motorcar PHH 3570 along the public road at Number 66 Village, Corentyne around 11 am on Sunday.
Chandradat Motee, a labourer of the same village, sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body. He was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post-mortem examination proved that he died as a result of the head injuries, his daughter, Malo Singh said. She told Stabroek News she learnt that her father was about to ride into the street to go home when he was struck down.
She said her father would normally leave home around 5 am to go to a ranch in the “savannah” where he took care of cows belonging to a farmer.
A police press release said the car PHH 3570 was proceeding along the roadway, when it is alleged that Motee “rode out from an access road and was struck down as he attempted to cross the public road.”
However, an eyewitness said the car which was speeding, overtook a canter truck and collided with Motee who was cycling in the opposite direction. He said the car lifted the man up and pitched him a short distance away.
Singh, who lives a few villages away, said her mother Hemwati Motee, 58, was praying in her ‘Shiwala’ in her yard when she got a call about the accident and that “she must go fast”. Just after that someone went with a bicycle to pick up the woman.
By the time the woman, who was too distraught to speak to this newspaper, got to the scene persons were assisting in taking her husband to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
