Police are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the alleged sexual assault of an 11-year-old female remand prisoner at the Beterverwagting Police Station even though the identity of the alleged perpetrator – a policeman – remains a mystery.
When contacted yesterday, Divisional Commander Gavin Primo said that investigations into the matter are continuing with a view to seeking legal advice since the alleged perpetrator has so far not been identified.
Following a Guyana Times article last week, the police dispatched a press release on the incident which allegedly occurredat Strathspey, East Coast Demerara, two Sundays ago.
The child who was charged with wandering and was on remand pending a probation report, police said, was allowed out of the lockups and placed to sit in the Enquiries Office in order to eat dinner brought by her father. This was around 18:20 hours, the police said. During this time, the child managed to walk out of the police station and was subsequently found at her father’s home in Strathspey.
After being returned to the Beterverwagting Police station where she was previously held, she alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a policeman. The police in their press release had noted that the girl was found in the same clothes that she wore at the time of her escape from the police station and “contrary to reports carried in the Guyana Times… , there was no trace of blood on the garments” .
The girl, police had said, was unable to identify the policemen or the location where the incident occurred.
She was later medically examined and it was found that she had a ruptured/perforate hymen and bruises on both legs.
A medical examination done on January 19 during investigations into the charge of wandering against her had also revealed that her hymen was ruptured at that time.
