Twenty-three-year-old Doodnauth Persaud, the East Coast Demerara (ECD) motorcyclist who was hospitalized following a vehicular accident on Saturday night, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday evening.
The young mans’ father Rooplall Persaud told Stabroek News yesterday at the family’s Lot 2 Cherry Field, La Bonne Intention home, that the second of his three children passed away shortly after 7:30 two nights ago at the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he had been a patient since the accident.
He said his son’s injuries were “too severe” for him to recover and the family is now awaiting the results of the police investigation into the incident. He said that the family had been in contact with the police on the ECD as regards the incident, and he hopes justice is served.
This newspaper understands that a police rank, who resides on the ECD and who is stationed at the Alberttown Police Station, is in custody in connection with the accident. According to a police source, the man has been charged on the ECD with driving under the influence of alcohol and additional charges are likely to be laid against him in connection with the incident.
Reports are that around 9 pm on Sunday, Persaud was on his motorcycle and heading east along the public road at LBI, when he collided with a silver grey car, PNN 1828, in the vicinity of a nearby gas station. The driver of the car was reportedly heading west along the public road and was attempting to turn into the gas station when he drove into the path of the motorcycle. Persaud was rushed to the GPH and was being treated for severe head injuries. He was later hooked up to a life support machine until his death.
