Six pounds of cocaine found in a Guyanese woman’s luggage on Monday night at JFK might have been planted and it is not clear if it was done in Guyana or Trinidad, well-placed sources have told this newspaper.
Stabroek News understands that it was the woman, 62, returning from Guyana with other relatives after holiday, alerted authorities at the airport that something was wrong. The woman had checked in her suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and according to usually reliable sources, it went through the scanner and nothing was detected.
However, upon arrival at JFK airport, the woman noticed that her suitcase had a strange ribbon tied on it. She alerted security to the fact that the suitcase was hers but she did not place the ribbon. On inspection, the drugs were found.
According to reports, the Caribbean Airlines flight would have stopped over in Trinidad and persons at that airport or at Guyana’s airport could have placed the drugs in the suitcase.
So far, US authorities have not charged the woman and investigations are continuing.
