A volleyball fiesta was held in the National Park last Sunday in honour of Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) President Lennox Shuffler whose 72nd birthday was on February 5.
According to a GVF press release, volleyball players from Berbice and West Demerara journeyed to Georgetown amidst inclement weather to participate in an “All Fours” Volleyball Fiesta.
Shuffler at the opening ceremony thanked the volleyball players for their attendance and indicated that the event will be an annual one for a lien trophy.
Among those present at the inaugural event were BVA President and GVF General Secretary Gregory Rambarran, GVF and BVA Vice-President and Current National Senior Coach Levi Nedd (who also played for one of the teams), GVF PRO John Flores of the GDF Coast Guard, GVF Assistant Secretary Amanda Hermonstyne of GPF, Committee Member Nicholas Fraser of the Allied Arts Unit, Under-19 Female Coach Trevor Smith and Referee Lennox Rowe.
Despite the intermittent rain, the action on the court was fast and intense and after the preliminary rounds, Guysuco Training Centre One defeated Port Mourant Jaguars in the finals 17-15.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the final, Shuffler congratulated the players but noted the absence of female volleyball players at the event.
He also outlined his plans to resuscitate the Demerara Volleyball Association and expressed sincere gratitude to Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall for contributing towards the success of the event.
Meanwhile, the multi-talented Vice-President of GVF, Levi Nedd who is also an accomplished chutney/soca singer led the players in singing ‘Happy Birthday’ for Shuffler who has been involved in volleyball in Guyana since 1958.
