After being out of commission for quite some time, the Burnham Basketball Court will finally be back in playing condition shortly.
President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Trevor Rose has recently received the long-awaited backboards and rings for the facility and they will be installed “before the week is out”, he assured. The backboards and rings were at the airport awaiting clearance.
Owing to the unavailability of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, the venue has become GABA’s main facility for hosting their tournaments. The removal of one of the backboards plunged the facility into a near unusable state and placed two of GABA’s tournaments on pause simultaneously.
Rose told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the venue should be back in order soon. He said that someone was sent to the court yesterday to inspect the mounts for the backboards and rings because adjustments have to be made to install the new backboards and rings.
Over two months ago the backboard was removed from the Burnham Court, putting GABA’s Division Two and Three Knockout Tournaments on an indefinite pause with no sign of a restart, until now.
The two tournaments, namely the ‘Kevin Worrell Third Division Knockout Tournament’ and ‘GABA’s Second Division Knockout Tournament’, both being contested at the Burnham Basketball Court, were brought to a halt due to the absence of a backboard at the outdoor facility.
The Burnham Court backboard was removed and used as a replacement for one of the backboards in the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), which was broken by a member of the Suriname basketball team during the IGG.
Even though only one backboard and ring is missing at the venue, the brand new backboards and rings will be installed at the facility and according to Rose this will be done before GABA’s Annual General Meeting and Elections on Sunday.
