National Sevens rugby Captain Theodore Henry told reporters shortly after arriving in Las Vegas for the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series that their game against England tomorrow will be like David versus Goliath.
The United States round of the tournament kicks off tomorrow in Las Vegas and will conclude on Sunday.
Henry was quoted in an article on the IRB website, saying: “The match against England is like David versus Goliath but it is a good start to play the very best and measure yourself against them so that everyone that comes after is going to be second nature to us to play them.
“But as long as the guys play their hearts out and we do better than last year that would make me happy.”
Along with Uruguay, Guyana is the least experienced on show at the United States leg of the Sevens World Series. In only their second IRB Sevens Series, the national team will be playing rugby superpower England in the opening match of the tournament tomorrow.
According to the report on the IRB website, “Guyanese rugby is readying itself for another quantum leap forward this weekend, in terms of both competitive action and spreading the rugby gospel.”
“The guys are very excited and very pumped up about playing this weekend… We played last year where we did quite well, but the objective is to do better this year,” said Henry.
The article continued: “The experience of playing in the Commonwealth Games and on the World Series has given the Caribbean champions [Guyana] a burning desire to develop even further and to continue their journey on the world stage.”
Meanwhile, Henry added: “We are building from strength to strength and it was a wonderful experience playing in India and we are looking forward to the Olympics with open arms.
“We get the most valued experience from playing in tournaments like this on the world stage against the very best. When we go back to the other tournaments we are a cut above the rest so these are the tournaments we really look forward to playing.
“Right now we are fighting with cricket to be the number one sport in Guyana so I guess if we do well that could give us the edge.”
In relation to their game which Guyana drew against France last year Henry stated: “We are focused on all the games but we do think we let that one slip last year against France and we are hoping we can do better this year.”
