The trial into the cocaine trafficking charge against US citizen Maxine Cecelia Batts, 64, commenced on Wednesday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Attorney Mark Waldron entered an appearance for the previously unrepresented Batts.
Batts, who appeared to have been in much pain and distress, cried intermittently during the proceedings.
Batts was placed before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on January 14 charged with trafficking nine kilogrammes, 490 grammes of cocaine, which was concealed in the seat and back pouch of her wheelchair.
The woman, who gave her address as 61 Eastern Parkway, New York City, has denied the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
