Guyana’s National Rugby Sevens side failed to make the expected impact crashing to two heavy defeats against England and Argentina on the opening day of the International Rugby Board (iRB) HSBC World Sevens Series tournament in Las Vegas, United States of America.
Against England, the Caribbean champs in only their sixth World Series match were beaten 0-49 while a few hours later the team succumbed 0-47 to Argentina.
England’s Tom Powell scored two tries in each half while Ben Gollings scored two first half tries and three conversions in their opening game rout of the locals who had expected a much better showing following their 12-12 draw with France last year.
Gollings scored his 211th try in World Series history while Simon Hunt and Matt Turner also recorded tries for England in the win.
Powell ended with 20 points, Gollings had 13 and Turner scored a try and two conversions for 11 points.
Rupert Giles, Elwin Chase, Leon Greaves, Christopher Singh and Walter George all came on as substitutes in the second half.
Against Argentina, the South Americans scored three tries and three conversions in the first half and four tries and three conversions in the second.
Ramiro Moyano, Francisco Cuneo and Francisco Merello each scored two tries for 10 points each for Argentina while Joaquim Todeschini and Gonzalo Gutierrez each scored three conversions.
Guyana were down to play France at 7pm last night.
