The recently resuscitated Linden Himara Aquatic Club has been reinstated as a member of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA).
The club’s revival comes on the heels of the GASA election which saw a new GASA executive body in office from January 1.
Newly-elected President of GASA, Alex Graham, had indicated earlier this year that one of the key objectives of the association in the first quarter of 2011 would be to resuscitate existing groups and seek new membership across the country.
“We felt that strengthening and expanding GASA’s membership was a good place to start as we seek to further develop and promote amateur swimming in Guyana which serves as a catalyst for advancing the sport at all levels nationally,” Graham had said.
The Himara Aquatic Club is now eligible to participate in the Inter-club Endurance Meet currently underway.
Coach of the club, Mary Chung, expressed delight with the club becoming a member of GASA.
She said: “This is a very important milestone for us as a club representing Linden and Region 10. We are also happy to be participating in the Inter-club Endurance Meet this weekend, and as usual, our swimmers will perform at their very best.”
The Linden Himara Aquatic Club was the first to be considered for reinstatement due a sterling performance at last year’s National Schools Swimming Championships where several schools from the mining town excelled, resulting in the Upper Demerara/Kwakwani region securing second place.
