National table tennis player and Olympic Solidarity coach Andrew Daly said yesterday that Saturday’s Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) training programme at the New Amsterdam
“I thought the programme was well attended,” said Daly adding, “ there were at least 35 persons between the ages of 10-50 years and drawn from various sections of the society that attended the course.”
The programme was the second in consecutive week-ends held by the
GTTA under its new and dynamic president Henry Greene who is attempting to spread the game throughout the country.
Greene told Stabroek Sports on Saturday that programmes are also planned for the mining community of Linden and Essequibo.
Last week former three time national men’s singles champion Colin France and Ray Copter Anderson conducted a stint in Berbice while on Saturday Anderson returned with Daly.
“Myself and Anderson took the players through the four basic strokes and we also showed them the proper stance,” Daly told Stabroek Sport.
The coaching programme comes just ahead of Wednesday’s Berbice Open tournament which is expected to be attended by Greene and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony.
Daly said the participants were enthusiastic about the programme.
“The feedback we got was that there were a lot of little things that the players were not aware of and it was requested that the programme be continued even after the Berbice Open, “he told this newspaper.
Daly said he could not say whether the GTTA had the resources to continue the programme for an extended period in Berbice but noted that the area had produced a number of national players over the years.
“The talent is there,” he said adding that lots more need to be done with the talent in order to achieve the requisite success.
