Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony has challenged the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) to institute a long term development plan to aid the country’s athletes in achieving their true potential.
Dr. Anthony threw out the challenge Saturday night whilst delivering the feature address at the AAG’s annual awards ceremony at the Young Men’s Christian Association building, Thomas Lands.
The minister also stated that government was keen on working in co-operation with the AAG.
“The government has invested its lot into the sport and wants to work along with the AAG in seeing the advancement of athletics,” Dr Anthony stated.
He added:”Maybe for the next five years we might not get the results we want but we look forward to a strong relationship with the AAG in the development of athletics in Guyana.”
He also said that the AAG in collaboration with the government could do more for athletics this year.
“Especially in the area of school sports… the 50th anniversary of the National Schools track and field championships held last year could have been better,” Dr. Anthony opined.
Dr. Anthony is also calling for segregation of primary and secondary schools track and field events. “I believe that primary schools should compete differently from secondary schools,” he said adding that he felt it was important and would benefit the sport. He also congratulated the winners of the awards on their achievements. According to the honourable minister, the AAG should get their personnel to focus on the scientific aspect of the sport in order to get up to date with the latest advances.
