Akecia Nedd brought Saturday night’s action of the annual Mashramani table tennis competition to a stunning climax with an upset win over Chelsea Edghill in the final of the girls’ 18 years and under division at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Nedd trailed by one set to two before roaring back to take the final two sets and triumph 11-7, 7-11, 7-11, 11-8 and 11-9.
The boys 18 years and under division has reached the quarter final stage with national Under-18 champion Nigel Bryan leading the qualifiers.
Also through to the last eight are national Under-15 champion Denzel Duff, Brandon Baldie, Denzel Hopkinson, Samuel Fraser and national Under-13 champion Jamaal Duff.
Prior to her upset loss to Nedd Edghill, the current junior sportswoman of the year had carted off the 15 years and under category with an easy 11-7, 11-1 and 11-8 win over Jamaali Homer.
Third place went to Priscilla Greaves who defeated Jewel Todd 11-6, 11-8, and 11-3.
Caribbean Under-13 silver medallist Jamaal Duff won the boys’ 15 years and under category with a 3-2 defeat of Sunil Logan.
Duff won 8-11,11-9,11-7,11-13,11-2. Third place went to Stefan Corlette who defeated Kyle Edghill 5-11,11-9,11-5 and 11-7.
Kyle Edghill had earlier played superbly to defeat Elishaba Johnson in the boys’ 13 years and under final.
Edghill won 11-4, 11-9, 9-11 and 11-6 while Khalid Gobin defeated Shammer Beaton 15-13,11-9, 9-11 and 11-7 to take third place.
National player Priscilla Greaves captured the girls 13 years and under category by defeating Homer 11-7, 11-9 and 11-6.
Third place went to Kristie Lopes who defeated Selena Jackman 13-11, 11-6 and 11-2.
On Friday, Nevaeh Clarkston, Niron Bissu, Selena Jackman and Jeremey Singh picked up titles in the 8 years and under, boys and girls’ and 10 years and under boys and girls’ categories.
The tournament will continue on Friday with the 21 years and under Open, senior mixed doubles and the men and women’s doubles starting from 16:30 h at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
