A truck carrying fourteen young men and loaded with several drums of fuel and groceries toppled on Monday while on its way from Buck Hall to Port Kaituma, North West District around 8 am.
According to reports reaching Stabroek News the incident has left one young man, Sterfan Carmel, battling for his life at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while another is reported missing and feared dead, and several others admitted to the Suddie Public Hospital, Essequibo Coast.
The truck belongs to gold miner Zambie Barakat of Charity, Essequibo, who has gold mining operations in the North West District. The reports said the loaded truck was transporting the drums of fuel and groceries to Barakat’s mining operations using the Buck Hall to Port Kaituma route.
The mishap occurred while the truck was going up a steep hill, the report added.
According to information the groceries and fuel along with the young men were thrown into the bushes.
After several minutes in the bushes all the men except Elvin Patron were accounted for.
They were rescued by another vehicle which took the injured men to the Suddie Public Hospital. According to reports some of the men escaped serious injuries while six others were admitted to the health institution nursing cuts and other injuries to their head and face.
Meanwhile, five of the injured men were treated and sent home. Carmel was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital after his condition was listed as serious.
Some of the injured men work on the truck as porters while others work in the mining area.
Police are investigating the accident.
