Workers at the Linden Hospital Complex are set to return to work today after receiving word that they would be paid their gratuity at the end of this month.
Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) Linden representative Maurice Butters told this newspaper late yesterday afternoon that the workers will be on the job from today and talks between the two bodies, GPSU and the Ministry of Health (MOH) will continue on Friday to decide on a way forward.
Workers of the Region 10 hospital were off the job in protest for more than one week calling for their gratuity to be paid in the February payroll.
The MOH had made a decision to pay the monies in March and September and not February and August as was customary.
The workers were also protesting the health ministry’s decision not to pay workers gratuity for periods of maternity, sick leave and other authorized leave.
Butters said that while the workers will resume active duty today, the union will be making strong representation with the MOH, beginning Friday, to have all the concerns of the workers addressed.
