Sherwin Fiedtkou, the dog breeder who was shot on Monday night, died just before midnight, while undergoing emergency surgery at the Georgetown Hospital.
A hospital official told this newspaper that Fiedtkou, 23, was shot once in the back and the bullet exited though his stomach. He succumbed around ten minutes to midnight.
Police said that Fiedtkou “was found in a yard at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown at about 20:00 hours with a suspected gunshot injury to his abdomen.” Three persons, including a man Fiedtkou was going to visit at the address, have been detained. All three detainees reside at the address where Fiedtkou was found.
Relatives and friends were yesterday in shock at the news of his death. His mother, Simone Richards said that she last saw her son around ten to eight, when he left home for North Ruimveldt with a dog that was in heat.
She explained that her son, popularly called “Tookie,” has been “breeding dogs” since around age 16. She said moments before he left, he had brought home a puppy. “My son was home and we had a little conversation and next thing I know he is in hospital with a gunshot wound,” a distraught Richards related. She added that at the hospital, doctors told her that he was critical and he had lost a lot of blood.
The woman said Fiedtkou, one of her six children, had no problems with anyone, “at least not that I know of.” She could not say what might have led to her son’s killing.
According to a relative of the detained men, Fiedtkou was confronted by the gunman and shot at the head of the alleyway. The man told Stabroek News that after being shot, Fiedtkou ran into the yard at Lot 3076 North Ruimveldt, where his friend resides.
The man said that the lone gunman then ran through the alleyway and “go long he way.” This newspaper understands that there was a car waiting near the Kaikan Street area for the shooter.
Asked who was held, the man responded, “They hold all me family” before identifying three persons. Up to press time, the men where still in custody.
According to the man, “They (Fiedtkou and the friend) does mind dog, you know. So, like he come to bring he dog to hang out with he friends.”
Residents said that the area where the shooting occurred is dark and people are usually afraid to walk there at night.
Reports indicate that Fiedtkou was trailed from his home and on exiting the car that had transported him to North Ruimveldt, he was shot.
Meanwhile, at the scene of the shooting, a resident recalled that some time after eight, she heard a loud sound but thought it was a squib. “I din tek it for nothing but shortly after a car drive up through the alleyway. First, they put in de dog and then they lift he out (of the yard),” the resident said.
The woman told Stabroek News that Fiedtkou was a regular visitor to the yard since his friend lives there. “Everyday, he comes and he does get these dog fight with this other friend….”
The resident related that a strange man, who was being tailed by two barking dogs, was seen walking calmly through a nearby street. She stated that the man had something wrapped in his hand.
She added that persons claimed that the shooter was wearing a hood but this person was not. “De two dogs walking behind he and barking bad, so it had to be he, because dog don’t walk behind yuh suh. These dogs, if you see how they walking and running behind this person, but remember we ain’t too certain is who,” the woman added.
