Guyana Softball League (GSL) president Halim Khan paid a courtesy call on Guyana’s ambassador in Cuba to promote and facilitate the beginning of a softball league on the island.
With over 800 Guyanese students at present studying in Cuba, a programme has been designed to facilitate a competition which will be held on February 23 to involve all the students. The tournament will held for one day and all the implements have been sent to Cuba to facilitate the tournament.
The tournament will be a collaborative effort between the Cuba Cricket Board, the Caribbean Association of Cuba and the Guyana Softball League.
According to a release from the GSL, the heads of the Cuba Cricket Board and the Caribbean Association of Cuba, along with Guyana’s Ambassador to Cuba Mitra Devi Alli, met with Khan and ironed out the details of this tournament and the future of softball cricket in Cuba.
In addition another tournament is scheduled to be held before Guyana’s 45th Independence celebrations; and the final of that tournament will be held on Independence Day.
The Cuba Cricket Board’s representatives stated in their remarks that they are eagerly anticipating these tournaments especially since they have heard a lot about softball cricket. They also noted that softball cricket may become part their year’s activities and they would like to see the sport enter the schools as part of the curriculum.
The Caribbean Association of Cuba representative remarked that they would love the people to experience the thrills of this brand of cricket which has brought joy to so many Guyanese.
According to the release Guyana’s ambassador to Cuba commented that she will be one of the participants and is hoping to show the Cubans what kind of talent she possesses on the field.
Khan opined that softball cricket contributes to healthy living and being an inexpensive sport will help in building new horizons wherever it is played.
