New university offering courses in health sciences

A new university operating out of the Critchlow Labour College (CLC) is offering courses in medicine, dentistry and nursing and says that students can complete their “clinical training in Guyana, the USA or the Philippines”.

According to an advertisement in the February 13 edition of this newspaper, Texila American University (TAU) is provisionally registered with the National Accreditation Council with a curriculum “modelled after the best medical schools in the USA” among other features.

The school is managed by Ashok Kumar, who told this newspaper that the school is a new institution which hopes to begin its programmes in March. Kumar said the school received its provisional registration from the council last November but was registered in September.

“When it comes to our school we are going through the government. What we are doing is going through the right processes,” Kumar told this newspaper.  According to the university’s website, www.texilaamericanuniversity.com, “TAU offers health science programmes with a high level of professionalism, exactness and problem solving skills, upon which the foundations of specialist training and an independent medical practice can be built, which facilitates further education and development of their knowledge throughout their life.”

The school says it offers full time programmes in “MD-Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and other allied health science programs and operates on a three semester system with classes beginning in February, June and October.”

The website states also that the university offers in-campus facilities such as career centre, counselling services and exchange programmes to various countries. According to Kumar the school is currently in the process of short- listing the lecturers for the courses. He said it had permission from the CLC to operate there.

Meanwhile, the National Accreditation Council confirmed that it had granted provisional registration to the university. This newspaper learnt that provisional registration means that an institution is given time to meet the minimum requirements to be accredited by the council. During that period the institution is closely monitored.
