Local furniture designers Liana Cane has been awarded the prestigious Canadian Design Lines Award at the January 2011 Interior Design Show (IDS11) held in Toronto. The pieces, which were created from locally produced cane, were adjudged the outstanding collection by the editors of the Canadian design magazine, Azure. The Toronto interior design show provides a marketing platform for almost 4,000 individual designers, studios, firms and companies.
The acclaimed Liana Cane collection, described by the Toronto Star as “outstanding’ will be seeking further recognition on the international stage at the upcoming Canada Blooms Show and again at the Salone de Mobile event in Italy in April this year. Stabroek Business has also learnt that the collection will be featured in an upcoming issue of the internationally renowned fashion magazine Vogue.
The Jocelyn Dow-owned Liana Cane enterprise was one of eight Guyanese craft production entities which formed part of a larger Caribbean contribution, the New Caribbean Design, created by international design expert Patti Johnson. The seven other Guyanese contributors: Irene Bacchus-Holder (Amazon Authentics), Sean Carrington (Wifi Hand-crafted Leather), Sharla Hernandez (Rupununi Crafters), Vanda Radzik (Makushi Embroider-ers), Shaun Summerson (Summerson’s Furni-ture), Richard Winter (Arawak Leather Craft) and Nicholas Young (Rainforest Pottery) reportedly launched an impressive display of intricately hand-designed exhibits which attracted considerable attention among a number of well-respected global marketers and retailers. Visitors to the Caribbean booth included renowned global retailers Amazon. com and Klaus and Kiosk.
In Canada, the Guyanese exhibitors also benefited from exposure to the more than 50,000 visitors who visited their booths.
