New Amsterdam (NA) Court yesterday, Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo deferred sentencing of man who appeared before her on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The court heard that on Wednesday February 16, Paul Wilson, of Tucber Park, NA had in his possession a large quantity of cannabis sativa. He would return to the NA court at a later date to know his fate. Another passenger of the car, Maria Sampson, 40, of Angoy’s Avenue, NA was also allegedly in possession of two parcels, one of which was strapped to her right leg. She pleaded not guilty to the offence and the prosecutor objected to bail on the nature, gravity and prevalence of offence. Sampson’s matter was transfer to the Fort Wellington Court. It would be called again on February 24.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter objected to bail on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. Together, the two had a quantity of drugs weighing 1,520 grammes in their possession. The prosecutor told that court that Wilson and Sampson were passengers in a Toyota Carina motorcar PKK 5848 when they were caught. The car was heading to Georgetown.
According to Playter, the car was stopped and a search was conducted. The marijuana was allegedly found in two parcels; one in his left side pants pocket and the other was strapped to his left thigh.
Meanwhile, four others who were allegedly caught with drugs during two separate roadblocks in West Berbice had been previously remanded to prison. Ryan Gulliver, 26, of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Georgetown, was allegedly caught with 485 grammes of cannabis sativa. He was heading to the Rosignol Stelling when the car was stopped and searched.
And during last week, three persons, Tavia Prince, 26, of Stevedore Housing Scheme, Lester Prince, 30, and a cousin, David ‘Tiger’ Kotious, 42, of Islington, East Bank Berbice, were reportedly caught with 1,980 grammes of cannabis. They were on their way to Georgetown, in a car, HB 7045, when it was stopped and searched around 5:25 pm at No. 10 Village. The cannabis was reportedly found in a blue bag beneath clothing.
