Dear Editor,
Current changes in Egypt and elsewhere have raised many questions about our own system of democracy and adequacy of representation in Guyana. It has been more than 14 years since local government elections were held.
Why is this absence of local elections not a matter of national concern? We should also address related questions about how regional chairpersons are selected.
Is it not time to directly vote for regional chairs who must be held accountable to the wishes of the people?
Furthermore, we need to revisit our outdated constitution that is crafted for administrative control rather than to foster development and job opportunities, especially among our young unemployed Guyanese.
Yours faithfully,
Dev Rawana
