The Godwin Mc Pherson Foundation and Banks DIH, New Amsterdam branch, have collaborated to host the Mashramani Basketball tournament that bounces off today at the Litchfield Basketball Court from 13:00 hours.
According to organiser of the two-day tournament Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell it will be for teams in Regions Five and Six and each team will be required to pay $6,000 as a registration fee.
The winning team will pocket $70,000 and a trophy while the second and third place finishers will receive $50,000 and $30,000 respectively. Barnwell said that trophies were donated by Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Rudolph Gajraj of the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMAADA) and the Godwin Mc Pherson Foundation.
There will be five games today while tomorrow there will be additional attractions and the grand finale.
Today Fyrish will clash with New Amsterdam’s C-Team in the opening match, No. 42 will take on the New Amsterdam B-Team, Rosignol United will play New Amsterdam A-Team, Litchfield opposes Bath Settlement and Hopetown will oppose Mahaicony in the final encounter of the day.
Mc Pherson was a former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Colonel who passed away at age 62 in 2009. He died at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital following a brief period of illness.
