Fiona Singh last evening retained her chutney crown when she bested 17 other contenders at the Anna Regina Multilateral Ground while Lindener Lester ‘De Professor’ Charles was crowned the new calypso king at Thirst Park early this morning.
A sizable crowd turned up at Anna Regina to witness the battle of the eighteen and while Singh’s performance could be described as satisfying many thought third place winner Mahendra Ramkellawan should have been the man with the crown. Ramkellawan’s ‘Dem a watch me’ was a hit with many and was on the tongues of many Guyanese long before the competition took shape. He put on an
electrifying performance but Singh and veteran Haresh Singh, an Essequibian who has won the crown many times before, were adjudged first and second respectively. Former Carib Soca Monarch winner Adrian Dutchin’s cross over into this genre did not work out too well as his ‘Ok’ song did not even win him best newcomer even though his performance was said to be good.
Over at Thirst Park De Professor belted out ‘Is dem gat it suh’ and this was enough to give last year’s second place winner the crown. De Professor is a veteran campaigner as he had won the crown in 2009. Last year’s winner `The Mighty Rebel’ did not participate in this year’s competition.
More joy was to be had for the Lindeners as this year’s Junior Calypsonian Queen Diana Chapman was adjudged second with her piece ‘Bring Back Anancy.’
