Gov’t authority being restored in hinterland – Bouterse

(De Ware Tijd) SNESIKONDRE — On Friday, President Desi Bouterse told the more than 300 persons attending the gold conference at Snesiekondre that ordering of the gold sector has a multiple goal. Among others, the hinterland has to be made safe again while simultaneously, the government authority should be restored in the hinterland. The ordering will not only benefit the State’s income but also locals who are not directly involved will be able to earn a living in the gold mining sector.

Bouterse also announced that in June of this year at the latest, there will be a big conference on the land rights problem of the Indigenous and the Maroons. It has been learned that the tribal chiefs have decided in a closed meeting that they will not agree to an exploitation licence for gold company Newmont in the Nassau area. The government starts negotiations with Newmont in march and wants to close a deal for the gold mine in the Nassau area in August at the latest.
