A 22-year-old man was last Thursday discovered dead in a hammock at Kurukabaru Village in the Lethem sub-division with marks of violence to his head and a loaded gun nearby.
Police are awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine if foul play was involved.
Divisional Commander David Ramnarine told Stabroek News yesterday that details surrounding the case are sketchy but the dead man’s name has been given as Jacob Aaron.
Assistant Commissioner Ramnarine explained that last Thursday night, the man’s wife found him in the hammock at their one flat home. He explained that the man “apparently had injuries to his head” and there was a firearm next to the body with two live rounds.
He explained that the village where the man was found is some three hours walk from the nearest police station.
Police went to the location yesterday morning and according to Ramnarine were forced to bury the man’s remains which were decomposing.
He said he is trying put plans in place to have the body exhumed some time early next week and examined. He said also that a team of police ranks is preparing to travel to the location to conduct further investigations.
“At this point we don’t know if it’s suicide or murder,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ramnarine told Stabroek News that a man accused of threatening persons with a gun in the Region Seven area is in police custody at Bartica after a loaded firearm was found in his living quarters.
He explained that a report was made to the police yesterday that a man was threatening persons with a gun in the St Mary’s Quarry area (in the Bartica District) and several ranks responded.
Following his arrest, the Commander said, the man’s living quarters were searched and an unlicensed firearm was found.
