Fiona Singh on Saturday evening retained her chutney crown when she bested 17 other contenders at the Anna Regina Multilateral Ground.
A sizable crowd turned up at Anna Regina to witness the battle of the eighteen and while Singh’s performance could be described as satisfying many thought third place winner Mahendra Ramkellawan should have been the man with the crown.
Ramkellawan’s ‘Dem a watch me’ was a hit with many and was on the tongues of many Guyanese long before the competition took shape.
He put on an electrifying performance but Singh and veteran Haresh Singh, an Essequibian who has won the crown many times before, were adjudged first and second respectively. Former Carib Soca Monarch winner Adrian Dutchin’s cross over into this genre did not work out too well as his ‘Ok’ song did not even win him best newcomer even though his performance was said to be good.
