Peter Ramsaroop’s group calls for debates among presidential candidates

The Guyana People’s Partner-ship (GPP) is urging privately-owned TV and/or the State media to broadcast or stream via the internet, Town Hall debates after the PPP and PNC have selected their presidential candidates.

In a press release the GPP said this process should start immediately after the parties have held their internal presidential candidate selection process. The AFC and the GPP have already announced their candidates. The GPP said the airing will be moderated by the media owners.

GPP presidential candidate Peter Ramsaroop said he is ready and willing to participate in the debates and posited that this process will reveal the candidate with the best vision for the nation. “The GPP is not opposed to this process also leading to a consensus opposition presidential candidate to face the PPP presidential candidate,” the release said.

The party believes that the 2011 budget was presented as a “Spend Spend Budget” geared at ensuring money was diverted to major contractors as quickly as possible and it believes that the suggested televised debates will highlight these and other issues early. The GPP also believes that the nation wants to hear from candidates their plans for constitutional change, their economic platform to ensure equal opportunities for all and their plan for improving the quality of life of all citizens, including ensuring universal access to high quality education and health care.

The party therefore calls on representatives from other parties to agree to meet with representatives of the Guyana Press Association to “hammer out the details” to ensure that its suggestion for the debate is realised.
