Essequibo River Island going for $80M

An island in the Essequibo River touted as a prime spot for eco tourism is now up for sale to anyone who can pay the $80 million price being quoted.

The island, which is located five miles from Bartica and a one hour boat drive from Parika, has been in the possession of the owners for the past five years.

According to Imran Chan, who described himself as a family friend of the owners who are overseas, the 1.1 acre island is “cleaned out and has a caretaker who lives in a small house”. He explained that the island was bought with a 50-year lease and five years have already expired but the remaining 45 years will be transferred to the new owner.

Asked why the owners are selling, Chan, who did not divulge their names, said the couple was “retiring” and decided to sell the island. He said there has been no development venture on the island but it is fully cleared. Chan also indicated that the island can be made bigger by developing a beach and said that it is a prime spot for a resort to be established.

While there have been some calls since the advertisement, Chan said there has been no real serious interest shown.

An advertisement in last Sunday’s paper described the sale of the island as a “ripe opportunity for unique property, tourism, commercial or private potential.” The advertisement further stated that there is deep water channel on one side and the prospective owner can enjoy sunsets and sandy beach.
