Dear Editor,
I wish to bring to the attention of the entire Guyanese public as well as visitors to this wonderful country, the celebration of the arrival of Indians here on May 5, 2011, at Highbury, on the East Bank Berbice. This grand occasion has, for many years been celebrated at Highbury, the site where the first ship with the first batch of Indians, from India, landed.
I wish to bring this occasion to the attention of members of the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) and ask that they make a very special effort to attend, since given the name of this organization, it would be presumed that the officials should be focusing their attention on the site where our foreparents landed – and that is Highbury, not Albion or Port Mourant.
One does not go to Le Repentir Cemetery to hold a memorial service for a person who was buried at Babu John, Corentyne.
I must say that I find it strange that the IAC, which is run by some very good friends of mine, never took part in the celebrations at Highbury. They have been more concerned with the money-making venture which has been celebrated at Albion on May 5.
Please be advised that to attend this grand occasion at Highbury the organizers are providing transportation to the site from all across Berbice free of charge. There is no charge to enter the concert area and the entertainment will be very cultural – songs, dances and skits. A sumptuous meal will be provided and all is free of cost.
This celebration starts at 10am and May 5 is a national holiday. The whole family can attend.
Yours faithfully,
Charrandass Persaud
