Cycle races as a feature of this year’s Mashramani celebrations will continue this weekend at the National Park and the West Coast of Demerara.
The weekend’s 20th Annual Mashramani Cycle Programme, sponsored by R&R International Limited has been organized by national cycling coach, Hassan Mohamed. The event will begin on Saturday with an 11-race cycle programme and conclude on Sunday with a 40-mile cycle road race.
Saturday’s race will begin from 09:00 hours at the National Park circuit and will see races in various categories including: BMX Boys 6 to 9 years (2 Laps), BMX Girls 6 to 12 years (1 Lap), BMX Boys 9 to 12 years (3 Laps), BMX Boys 12 to 14 years (3 Laps), BMX Boys Open (3 Laps), 12 to 14 years Boys and Girls (3 Laps), Veterans Under – 50 years (5 Laps), Veterans Over – 50 years (5 Laps), Juveniles (10 Laps), Upright Cyclists (5 Laps) and Schoolboys and Invitational (35 Laps).
Last year’s winner in the 35 laps event was Warren McKay in a time of one hour 24 minutes and 17 seconds, while the winner of the juvenile race was Neil Reece in a time of 24 minutes and 52 seconds.
Meanwhile Sunday’s 40-Mile Cycle Race will commence from the Demerara Harbour Bridge from 09:00 hours, and proceed to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Harbour Bridge for the finish.
The defending champions of the 40-mile road race are Geron Williams, who won the senior race in a time of one hour, 44 minutes and 53 seconds, while Neil Reece and Raymond Newton were the Junior and Veteran category winners respectively.
The first six finishers in the senior category will receive prizes while the first two juniors and Veterans will also receive prizes. Additionally, six prime prizes will be up for grabs during the course of the race.
Former cyclist and Manager/Director of R&R International Limited, Jacob Rambarran is expected to distribute the prizes to the winning participants.
