Rain forced a last minute postponement of the Rising Sun horse race meet on Sunday at Arima Park, West Coast Berbice.
Excessive rainfall on Saturday night and the entire Sunday left the Rising Sun Turf Club underwater, forcing the organizers of the pre-Mashramani meet to call off the activity at the last moment.
According to the organisers a new date will be named shortly. Nine events were listed on the day’s card and over 65 horses had entered to participate in the day’s activity. Over $3.5 million and other awards were up for grabs.
The feature event still remains the B class horses over 1300m and will be sponsored by Banks DIH Limited and the prize money for that race is close to $1 million. The first prize is $450,000 and the company’s trophy.
Turfites, according to organisers Fazal Habibulla and Inshanally Habibulla, would have seen the ongoing rivalry among horses such as Prince Charming, Night Crescendo, Marathon Man, Wad A Luck, Gullium, Miss Orientate and Delmur Gold in the main event.
The three-year-old race for horses bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies had a top prize of $250,000. This race, according to organizers, had some first-rate three-year-old horses. The other three-year-old event for horses bred and born in Guyana also had some first-class entrants and would have fetched a top prize of $200,000 and a trophy.
Sabrina Joy, Princes Yasmin and Better than Gold, Super Cat, Wicked Intention, Apostle, Royal Salute and Million Dollar Man are among the three-year-olds.
Meanwhile, leading individual performers including champion jockey, champion trainer and champion stable will all receive trophies and other prizes.
