Charity family lose home to fire

A mother and her three children, of the Charity New Extension Scheme, Essequibo, lost their home to fire last evening.
The fire, which occurred around 19:30 hrs, gutted the two-bedroom wooden house.

According to reports reaching Stabroek News, the fire is suspected to have been started by a kerosene lamp.
Monette Rahaman, 24, said she and her three children went to visit a friend in the same area. The woman related that she later received a message from another friend that her house was on fire.

The distraught Rahaman said when they arrived at the scene neighbours were already trying to put the fire out by dousing it with water using buckets.
However, it was in vain. The fire destroyed everything inside the house, including identification documents.

The fire truck was already at the scene when this newspaper arrived but it was not put into operation as the destruction was already done.
According to Rahaman, the family only started renting the home some three months ago from owner Sharon English, who is out of the country. The woman noted that her husband, Derrick, is currently working in the interior.

Trying to hold back tears, she said she would spend the night at a friend.
