Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) said yesterday that residents of the low coastal regions should implement precautionary measures, in the event of excessive rainfall and flooding.
GWI said in a press release that should the water supply be compromised due to flooding, persons must ensure that all tap water intended for food and drink preparation and personal consumption (brushing of teeth etc.) is boiled for 15 minutes.
GWI said also that persons must ensure that boiled water, whilst cooling before use, is stored in a tightly covered container.
Alternatively, water can be made safe by using household bleach: add 3 to 4 drops of household bleach to each gallon of water; mix well and allow to stand for 30 minutes before use. And treated water must also be stored in a tightly covered container.
GWI also called on residents to “practice rainwater harvesting” but to avoid contamination they should allow water to runoff from the roof for approximately thirty minutes before collection.
In the meantime, customers should promptly repair all leaking pipelines within their premises. For further information customers are advised to call the GWI Customer Services Call Centre on 227-8701, the release concluded.
