Dear Editor,
I refer to the $29.5M Cummings Lodge Development Centre that was commissioned recently by the government.
The Kaieteur News did a good job in highlighting the excessive spending involved, but did not go further to explore the true motive behind this project and its uselessness. I have lived for fifty years now in Cummings Lodge, so when I saw the release in the newspapers I checked the length and breadth of the village but could not locate this centre.
I then found out that this spanking new building was in a desolate area in Sophia. Mind you the name Cummings Lodge was marked on it.
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that no resident in Cummings Lodge will go to this centre. The government thinks that merely highlighting the spending of $29.5M in the media for this village will maintain their stranglehold on the voters come election day, and they may be right since traditionally PPP supporters are the most tolerant people in the history of Guyana.
They vote for this party on simply hearing about progress rather than experiencing it.
The government should have spent that money to upgrade a piece of land in the Cyril Potter College of Education ground which would have gone a far way to alleviating the rampant rum-drinking, drug abuse and loitering going on among the youths of Cummings Lodge right now.
Yours faithfully,
R M Khan
