The New Amsterdam Warriors Basketball ‘A’ team are now $70,000 richer after winning the Godwin McPherson Foundation Mashramani Basketball tournament Sunday at the Litchfield Basketball Court. After getting past Fyrish 35-20 in the semi finals, Warriors went to the finals of the competition and defeated the home team, Litchfield 43-28 to bag the top prize.
Warriors’ Randy Richardson scored a game high 14 points in the finals with Carlos Crandon adding 13 to the Warriors’ total.
Richardson and Crandon also led their team’s scoring in the semi-finals with 13 and 10 points respectively. Yannick Wade was the top scorer for Litchfield in the final with 13 points, while teammate Trevor Doris contributed 10.Richardson was adjudged the most valuable player of the two-day competition which was contested in a round robin format.
It was held in collaboration with Banks DIH, New Amsterdam branch and was organized by Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell for teams in Regions Five and Six.
In addition to the $70,000 purse the winning team pocketed, the second and third place teams received $50,000 and $30,000 respectively. Trophies were donated by Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Rudolph Gajraj of the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMAADA) and the Godwin McPherson Foundation.
