Twenty-two students from Region 10 will be honoured today at the eighth annual Pam Porter Scholarship Award Ceremony, at McKenzie, Linden.
According to a press release, for the primary school awardees each child will receive a bursary of $30,000 and an engraved piece of crystal. The Best Student at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) Crystal Clarke, of Regma Primary, will receive a laptop computer as an additional incentive. The other primary level awardees are Andrew McCloud of St Aidans, Dainan Boodie of One Mile Primary, Nazeem Welcome of Wismar Hill Primary, Dwayne Williams of Christianburg Primary, Akel Aprel of Amelia’s Ward Primary, Michael Layne of McKenzie Primary, Cleon Bovell of Watooka Day Primary, Michael Boyle of Kwakwani Primary, Ruthel Richards of Coomacka Primary, Pauline Bennette of Mabura Primary 1, Shereel Paul of Mabura Primary 2, Shinay Stephens of Aroraima Primary and Joy Peters of Rockstone Primary.
Each of the secondary school awardees will receive a bursary of $40,000 and a piece of engraved crystal. The best CSEC student, Meletia Hossanah of McKenzie High, will also receive a laptop computer. The other honourees are Saskeia Warde of Wisburg Secondary, Louise McCloud of New Silver City Secondary, Diana Smith of Linden Foundation, Diandra Gomes of Kwakwani Secondary and Devon Tyson of Christianburg Wismar Secondary.
The best CAPE student, Suzanne Hamilton, will be given a bursary of $50,000, a piece of engraved crystal and a laptop computer. The top nursing student, Carala Major of the Charles Rosa School of Nursing, will be given a bursary of $30,000, a piece of engraved crystal and a laptop while the top student of the Linden Technical Institute Malcolm James will be given $30,000, a piece of engraved crystal and a Wii console.
According to the release, the awards are the brainchild of Whiddon Sibdhannie Jr, founder of Linden website Guymine.com They are held in memory of his deceased mother, “whose passion for education embraced no boundary.” At the first ceremony, hosted in 2003, five students were honoured.
The programme will be held at the L&L Restaurant, Green Heart Street, McKenzie, at 5pm.
