Writer and columnist Allan Fenty last evening launched, “A Plate-a-Guyana Cook-Up,” a pocket book collection of Creole proverbs.
The book launch was part of ongoing observations to mark Guyana’s Republic Anniversary and was held at the Umana Yana.
Over a hundred Creole proverbs are translated andinterpreted in the book. Fenty has presented his collection of proverbs on the national radio for a number of years.
Fenty said the book has been in the making for a long time and now that it is out he hoped it provoked thoughts on the explanations of the folkloric wisdom the booklet offers. He noted too that the book was his way of keeping folkloric tradition alive.
Commending Fenty on his book, Culture Minister Frank Anthony encouraged him to build on his works. Fenty, Anthony stated, was one of the persons who pushed for programmes that highlight folk culture.
Meanwhile, following the launch, a Queh Queh demonstration was enacted as a folkloric celebratory tribute to Afro-Guyanese traditions in this UN-designated Year for People of African Descent. The ceremony sequence was
explained by local actor Henry Rodney.
