Japan helping region in solid waste management

The Caribbean Environment and Health Institute (CEHI) is benefiting from the expertise of Hideki Wada, an expert from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to enhance cooperation in regional solid waste management.

According to a press release from the Caricom Secretariat member states have entered agreements with Japan on enhancing cooperation between the two parties in waste management. The agreements signed are the Partnership for Peace, Development and Prosperity between Japan and the Member States of the Caribbean Community and Japan-CARICOM Partnership Program.

Wada, whose term of mission began in January and ends in March 2011, will work with officials in solid waste management in seven member states that have participated in the training course Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Caribbean Islands in 2009 and 2010. These countries are Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.

In recognition of the need for improvement in critical areas such as landfill construction, education, national policy, financing and networking, Wada will cover issues including source segregation, final disposal, environmental education, facility preparation, municipal waste and industrial waste.
