Local groups launch ‘Facing the Future’ initiative

Fourteen local organisations are collaborating and sponsoring a year-long discourse to engage political parties and citizens on issues preventing citizens from realizing their potential in Guyana.

In a press release the groups said the ‘Facing the Future’ initiative is premised on the fact that Guyanese of all races mix easily on a day-to-day basis and enjoy and celebrate each other’s festivals and food. Guyanese “share a sense of fair play, of respect for law and order and belief in the equality of opportunity for everyone to improve themselves” and enjoy success in many other countries to which they have been migrating for years.

The first phase of the plan will be hosted within the next two months, capitalising on opportunities of the electoral season to engage political parties. The opportunities will be created for a wide cross-section of the society to both contribute and listen to other opinions.

According to the release, the Rights of Children (ROC) group hosted one of three major events planned last Saturday. This session was geared at youth. The next two sessions will be held on March 8, for women and on March 12 for civil society groupings.

The groups also plan to host a session at month end with a distinguished team comprising constitutional lawyer Dr Yash Ghai, constitutional expert Dr Jill Cottrell and former  Deputy UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Dr Bertie Ramcharan. The team is expected to meet many sectors of the Guyanese society and to analyse the groups’ findings, relative to their experience around the globe.
