CARICOM and the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Secretariat of Multidimensional Security of the OAS are meeting with Caribbean universities on the drug phenomenon in the region.
In a press release, the CARICOM Secretariat said the three-day meeting, which opens in Jamaica today, is organised in tandem with the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the National Council on Drug Abuse in Jamaica.
“It is designed among other things to share findings on the existence of, and extent to which the drug phenomenon is addressed in the curricula and activities of Caribbean Universities,” the release said.
Among the keynote speakers are: CARICOM’s former Assistant Secretary-General, Human and Social Development Dr Edward Greene; Ambassador James Mack, Executive Secretary CICAD/OAS; Myrna Bernard, Officer in Charge of Human and Social Development at the CARICOM Secretariat; Professor Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor of UWI’s Mona Campus; Dr Maureen Ions-Morgan, Director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the health ministry in Jamaica; and Dr Winston De La Haye, Lecturer and Consultant Psychiatrist at the Mona Campus.
