Region 2 Chairman Ali Baksh said the region has recently started to develop agricultural lands so that persons residing in the nine new housing schemes can gain employment.
In a recent interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA), Baksh said the region has sufficient house lots for distribution, although some persons are still reluctant to occupy certain areas, especially at Lima Sands. “We have an additional 3,599 house lots now if people want to go there and settle, but what we have also embarked on recently is to develop some agricultural lands so that persons can also be gainfully employed,” he said. So far 200, 10-acre plots of land at Onderneeming, 200 at Siriki and 100 10-acre plots at Warapana, Upper Pomeroon have been offered to residents for agriculture production as part of the ‘Grow More Food’ campaign.
Government is also working with financial institutions to facilitate and expedite loans for potential homeowners, resulting in individuals being able to access loans at commercial banks at an interest rate of 4.95%, he said.
Meanwhile, the Housing and Water Ministry will soon commission a $450M water treatment plant at Lima, Region Two. A new well is also being dug in the area to expand the water supply beyond the township. Also, “we have already completed drilling a new well in Somerset and Berks and we are also doing the extension lines for residents in that area,” Baksh said.
