The Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Challenge Series has been rescheduled to March 11-13 from its original February 25-27 date, according to a release from YBG yesterday.
The tournament, which marks YBG’s second event of the year, will commence Friday, March 11 and continue on the following Saturday and Sunday. Jump ball for each day is slated at 13:30hrs.
According to the release, the event will feature a knockout tournament and will also include a three-on-three tournament and a variety of skill-based events, such as a three-point shootout competition, free throw shoot-out pair competitions, skill challenges and two ball exhibitions. The YBG Challenge Series is open to all schools and many schools from within the capital city and the East Coast as well as teams from the Upper Demerara region are expected to compete.
A number of young stars from school basketball have already indicated their interest in the shootout competition, including School of the Nations guard Jonathon Pooran, Guyana Education Trust College guard Dominic ‘The Logo Kid’ Vincente as well as Tequain Vieira and Jonathon Beaton from Marian Academy.
The release revealed that “a fresh new spin” has been incorporated into this event since the shootout will see teams of two shooting and cooperating for the shooting title. “While one person shoots, another rebounds and they will rotate their roles and race against the clock for both the three-point shootout and free throw competition.”
“While there aren’t any restrictions forbidding persons who are not on the same school team to join up and take part, participating with teammates is highly encouraged. The aim of the exercise fundamentally is skills development which YBG feels is best harnessed and nurtured in the school team environment,” the release stated.
