Junior Cyclist, Neil Reece of The Flying Ace cycling club delivered a top class performance to capture victory in the Mashramani cycle road race Sunday in New Amsterdam.
The event was organised by the Flying Ace cycling club in commemoration of New Amsterdam’s Mashramani celebrations which
were also held Sunday following the race.
The race saw 18 cyclists pedaling off from Marks Bridge, Lot 60 Stanleytown at 08:30 hours; proceed to the Gas station at Bush Lot Village on Corentyne before returning to finish at Main and Alexander Street in New Amsterdam.
Reece was unchallenged at the finish line to take a comfortable win over Rohan Persuad, who finished in a distant second position.
Ray Millington was third, followed by Keith Griffith, Wasim Hasnoo and Elijah Brijjader as they round out the top six finishers in that order.
The beginners category was won by Brij Jader with Shawn Israel finishing second and Victor Henry third, while Berbice’s Maricia Dick was the lone female competitor and rode away the prize in her category after competing with the males. The beginners, along with Dick turned back at Tain and covered a distance of 30 miles.
There were eight sprint prime prizes up for grabs during the course of the race, of which Reece captured five and Millington the remaining three.
Following the race, Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha assisted with the presentation and congratulated Reece for his outstanding performance and also congratulated the other participants for taking part in the event.
The Flying Ace cycling club and the club’s coach Randolph Roberts were also acknowledged by Mustapha for successfully organizing the event. Mustapha further revealed that the Region will make the race an annual event.
