The Western Union Hikers junior hockey teams indoor tournament concluded Sunday afternoon at the National Gymnasium with Everest Hikers and the Georgetown Cricket Club teams standing out.
The first day of the tournament was dominated by the Old Fort team in the James Service Centre-sponsored under-13 category while the second day belonged to the GCC girls and Hikers boys’ teams.
As the two-day tournament progressed, there were a few surprises with the Hikers girls team managing to meet the final of the United Associates Security and Domestic Services under-16 category where they were defeated by the GCC ‘B’ team.
In the under-16 boys event there was a thrilling high-scoring final between Hikers A and GCC A teams with the former winning the matchup 4-3, thanks to Hiker’s Hilton Chester who scored twice in the final. The Woodpecker Products-sponsored under-21 boys and girls’ categories were won by Hikers D and GCC C respectively.
GCC C got the better of their B and A teams to be crowned the girls under-21 champions while it was the Hikers D team which got the better of their B team in the final 1-0 to win the boys under-21 finals.
School of the Nations took the title in the Global Technology-sponsored schools’ category after defeating North Ruimveldt Multilateral in the final of that category.
At the presentation ceremony that followed the tournament, Junior Development Coordinator of the Hikers Hockey Club, Robert Fernandes, thanked the National Sports Commission (NSC) for allowing the club the use of the facility. He also thanked team sponsor Western Union for their continued support of the club’s junior programme.
In addition to trophies and medals distributed to the winners, Global Technology presented the winning team and most valuable girl and boy from the schools’ category with certificates for free classes in foundation and advanced levels at the institution. Compliments of Woodpecker Products, the MVPs of each category were presented with gift certificates worth varying amounts redeemable at the company. The MVPs of the various categories were: Makeda Harding (Marian Academy A) and Akeem Wilson (Old Fort) – under-13 categories, Aliyah Gordon (Queen’s College) and Micha Hartman (North Ruimveldt Multilateral High school) – schools category, Dacia Woodroffe (GCC B) and Leon Bacchus (Hikers B) – under-16 categories and Ashley deGroot (GCC C) and Aroydy Branford (Hikers D) – under-21 categories.
