Savitri Ramdeen, the occupant of the Albouystown house that collapsed on Tuesday, is asking for assistance from any organisation or person in a position to help.
Ramdeen, 61, told Stabroek News that she visited the Guyana Relief Council (GRC) and was informed that until she has a fixed place of abode which the council can see, only then would it give her a mattress. The woman explained that she is currently staying at 17 James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, at a friend, Puntie (only name given), who provides her with meals. “I can’t stay deh forever… she got she family and so. Nobody can’t keep yuh forever,” the woman stated.
Ramdeen related that on the tragic day she was walking up her stairway when she heard a crackling sound. Realising that something was wrong, she rushed to her neighbour’s yard, just a few feet away, and within a few seconds her house crumbled to the ground.
Ramdeen said that she is hopeful that the authorities would offer assistance by rebuilding her home. The woman recalled making a visit to Food for the Poor in 2007, asking for some repairs to be done to her home. She said she had left a neighbour’s number through which she could be contacted since she had no telephone. But she never heard from them.
The elderly woman said that she is unable to work since she suffers from diabetes and low blood pressure.
