TAUNTON, England, CMC – Joel Garner has agreed to become a patron of the Glastonbury Club.
The 58-year-old West Indies fast bowling legend played for the club in the early 1990s, helping them secure the Somerset Division 1 title. Garner has remained in touch with the club ever since, and readily accepted the position of patron, after being contacted by close friend and new club secretary Las Latty.
“It is a real coup and an honour for Glastonbury to attract such an icon of the game to its ranks,” said Latty.
“The news has caused great excitement and anticipation among our members, and we will be welcoming Joel in person during June.”
Garner has pledged to do all he can to support the club and a number of special events will be arranged to celebrate his visit to Glastonbury. The club will however, have to share the attentions of Garner. He is currently a director of the West Indies Cricket Board, and also president of the Barbados Cricket Association. Garner, known by his nickname Big Bird, enjoyed a decade at Somerset’s County Ground and was part of the club’s most memorable team alongside Sir Ian Botham and Sir Viv Richards.
