(Go Jamaica) The Sugar Association of the Caribbean says Jamaica led sugar production in the region in January this year with 22,872 tonnes.
Belize followed with 18,283 tonnes and Guyana produced 9,806 tonnes. This means the total for the three countries was 50,961 tonnes in January. Barbados, the fourth sugar producing country in the region, was not in production. Chairman of the Sugar Association of the Caribbean, Karl James, says the US$820 per tonne received as payment for sugar is the best price in many years.
